Medieval castle of Montsonís
Montsonís is a castle with approximately a thousand years of history, constructed in 1024 by the Count of Urgel Ermengol II with the purpose of protecting its land. At that time visitors were arriving at Montsonís; pilgrims of the Way of Santiago could stay in one of the rooms of the castle, but they were, for security norms, closed with a lock and key to prevent them for walking with impunity through the entire house at night.
Now, the visitors can visit all the dependencies of the Castle (the kitchen, the prison, the watchtowers, the room of the pilgrim, the dungeon, etc.) and know its history thanks to the guided visit. With an explanation adapted to each age, the guided visit of the Castle takes the visitor back to Middle Ages.
Small Villages
Montsonís is surrounded by small villages or towns that offer a great cultural and tourist interest. Tourists can either visit medieval monuments or roman churches, or enjoy the typical gastronomy of the area. - Artesa de Segre, only three kilometres away from Montsonís, is a reference in the region. Like a meeting point in the Valley of all the towns of the area, it is the commercial town by excellence where we can definitely buy all the best products of the area, on Sunday, during the Weekly Market, on the busiest day of the week.
- A few minutes away by car, Balaguer is also a good place to go to. On Saturdays, people go to the weekly market. The visitors can also admire the church of Santa Maria and the convent of Santo Doménech, both of gothic style; we recommend to discover the remains of the ancient walls of the medieval time, or to go to the Castle Formós, which has Arab origins.
- Àger is another town with character. The magnificent enclosure of the castle, the roman church of Santo Pere, the gothic cloister and the Roman sarcophagus of the parochial church, represent some of the attractiveness of this town.
